Recently, I’ve beaten two AAA games that have come out in the last few years, one of them is Cyberpunk 2077 and the other is Marvel’s Spider-Man two, both on the PlayStation 5 video game console by Sony.
What struck me is the difference in quality and pacing and tone of these two very high profile games, and how I think there is a big difference in the approach on how to handle AAA game. Cyberpunk tries to go for a kitchen sink approach, it just throws so much at you so quickly, and yet there are so many moments that are just so slow and dull, mostly the cut scenes, yet the game never cuts from the first person‘s perspective so every sit around and talk scene just feels like it drags on forever because if you just let the controller sit, you’re just staring from your characters viewpoint and it’s very dull. Of course that’s the tone they’re trying to go for, but what I also found lacking was how little I cared about what was happening in the story and any of the characters. I think it’s actually negative to have Keanu Reeves play a big character because it seems like they may be wrote a lot extra knowing that they got him, and tried to shoehorn him in a whole bunch of different places, but I think it was just stunt casting and was distracting. But what shocked me the most was just how minor everything felt, oh I need to go steal this chip from some hacker. OK I got the chip great. There’s so few times when I felt like I wanted to see what would happen next.
Contrast that with Spider-Man two where it’s a completely different type of game, yet it’s also open world with a lot of side missions to complete, and of course, the tone in the setting are wildly different let alone the fact that it’s third person, but what it has that cyberpunk doesn’t have is likable characters and a sense that there is something potentially catastrophic. That’s going to happen if you don’t save the world because you’re the only people who can do it. In cyberpunk what you’re trying to achieve is to get a virus out of your head basically. And with Spider-Man two what you’re trying to achieve is to stop a virus from taking over the planet Earth. It’s not fair to just compare to different styles of game, one is rated T and one is extremely hard M, and that’s not bringing up the UI and the sounds and everything else that is a bit harsh and a little mismatched in cyberpunk, obviously they’re going for a certain type of look, but I found the UI mostly confusing and hard to parse despite its aesthetic choices.
A big difference is the fact that one is coming from a Polish developer with Polish sensibilities that might be quite different than what I’m used to, maybe even some translation issues making the dialogue, dull in many cases, but the main thing I think the difference is can be boiled down to pacing, cyberpunk will let you just go anywhere and do anything and your phone is ringing off the hook with people, you’ve never met offering you jobs immediately once you’re out of the tutorial area. Spider-Man breaks up the game after various big story moments and will open up side missions and have certain unwalkable’s. That can only be achieved during certain parts of the game and it never feels over overwhelming. I felt the same way with another Sony Studios game ghost of Yotei. That game had a slickness to it and a focus, not to mention a clarity in the UI and presentation, but there is a certain type of cleanliness and precision to the approach that Spider-Man also has, nothing feels too jarring, or distracting, yet they are fairly similar, where you have a large world and many different things you can do in it. I would be surprised if Spider-Man sold even half as many copies, obviously it’s not on as many consoles and only was later added to PC, but I would also like to compare the team size and the time it took to make, granted they are able to use a lot of carryover from the first two games, but it’s not about boiling down these hard numbers to explain why I like one more than the other, or saying that smaller scope is better or first person isn’t as good, obviously I don’t think that, but I think that some lessons could be learned from Spider-Man where it definitely isn’t on rails, but it’s not at all overwhelming, but there’s just the feeling you get that is hard to explain and I just didn’t really care for the feeling of cyberpunk. I really like cyberpunk in general, and with the recent marathon, I’m getting that much more than the cyberpunk game, even though I do have slight issues with that UI, but that’s not part of this blog post. It is difficult to try and narrow down and explain a feeling of oh I want to keep playing this game not only because the mechanics of swinging are fun but the interaction between all the other characters And seeing where the story goes, especially having a decent knowledge of the Spider-Man lore and just wanting to see how it makes its own path and choices. Anyway I love em both!

Balatro but a bowling game, think about it. Upgrade individual pins to be worth more "mult" or "chips" or "x mult" or have like each time ball goes in the gutter the next ball is x2 or like bigger ball or more pins or shorter lane or ramps on the lane or etc. etc. it could work
